My Sister, Sewing

Blue A-Line Skirt

When my sisters and I first starting learning to sew, our teacher had us do a simple skirt as the first project. So we each did our own using the same basic pattern drafted from our own measurements. This project I’m sharing here was made by my younger sister. Now that I think about it, how long ago it was… 11 years ago, in fact, that we started sewing lessons, and this was her very first sewing project.

The shape of this is very basic. As the name suggests, the skirt has kind of the shape of the letter A. It’s fitted at the waist, then gently slopes out toward the hem. My sister chose to make hers blue.

This skirt is made in three pieces, with seams at the sides and back, plus a waistband that is made separately and then sewn on. It opens with a zipper in the back seam and a single shiny button for the waistband.

I have no pictures of the hem, but she actually sewed it by hand so the stitches wouldn’t show. This was before we got our own machine that came with an invisible hem foot.

And that was my sister’s very first sewing project. Looking at the stitching makes me remember how it was when we first started and makes me realize how much her skills improved over the years.
