This is the next dress my sister made after the blue one. Looking at it now, it has a very vintage vibe to it. At least that’s what it seems to me, someone who doesn’t know much about specific vintage styles. This dress is made of cotton poplin as well. My sister started making it, then realized she didn’t have enough fabric. When she got some more, it wasn’t quite the same shade of purple. Since she had already cut some of the first color, she decided to use both, but make the bodice out of the darker color, and the skirt, sleeve cuffs, and button placket out of the lighter color.
The shape of the bodice is much like some of the previous blouses, with the princess seams to the shoulder in front and back. The sleeves are gathered all around the sleeve cap where they are sewn to the bodice. The sleeve cuffs are simple and finished with topstitching.
The dress has a white Peter Pan collar, which is probably one of the elements that most contribute to the vintage look in my mind. A lace edging finished the rounded edges of the collar. The button placket is the standard type used for the other blouses she made, also finished with topstitching. For this dress, she chose light purple buttons with holes through them, as opposed to the stem buttons she used on many of her other projects.
The skirt is a full circle skirt. It has bias tape to finish the hem.
There are buttons in the front, but they only go down to the waist. So it was necessary to have an invisible zipper in the back.
The element of this dress that my sister was most excited about was the hidden pockets. They’re sewn into the side seams of the skirt, and they have invisible zippers to close them.
There are so many design elements in this dress, as well as my sister’s other projects, that I don’t think I would have had the patience to do myself. I am a little in awe as I look at the things she did.
